NW Migration Stories

These migration stories, gathered by our volunteers, provide a glimpse into the lives of some of the people who have moved in and out of our region throughout history. Select a tile below to read an individual story or filter the stories by a topic or theme that interests you. Some people may find information in the stories distressing so use the filters to help you. You can also access the stories via our interactive map.

The stories take you on a journey around the world, to the different places each person lived. If you prefer to read in a more linear way, click on the three dots on the top right of the page and choose Print Preview.

Our project historian, Professor Corinna Peniston-Bird from Lancaster University, has written a brief introduction to the stories, inviting us to reflect on the wider histories they reveal and the resonances they have for us today.

Many thanks to all our adult and youth volunteers from across the region who collected these stories, both historical and contemporary. Thanks go also to the Storytellers who so generously shared their own experiences of migration and finally to the many heritage partners who have supported us. You can see a full list of these partners here.
