Cheshire Global Learning

Between 1997 and 2017 Heather Swainston was Director of Cheshire Development Education Centre (CDEC), based in Chester. We were the main provider of global education services across Cheshire, Halton, Warrington and Wirral, delivering many curriculum development projects and working directly with children and teachers.

In 2002 we undertook the project Cheshire Voices – Stories from People Living in Cheshire with Roots in Other Parts of the World. 28 people’s stories were gathered, and a book was published with a 1000 print run. It was highly successful with a well-attended launch and accompanying exhibition. We know it inspired the project and book Coming to Alsager: Stories of Journeys, Survival and Arrival in 2004 and then more latterly in 2012 Journeys to Cheshire – An Oral History of Members of Black and Minority Ethnic Communities that have made Contributions to Cheshire since the Second World War. We also ran a project, Brook Street – The World in Our Street, in 2017 which is about Chester’s most multicultural street. We collected a number of stories, worked with Global Link to make three digital stories and created a teacher pack.

Heather now works independently as Cheshire Global Learning and is delighted to be a partner in Migration Stories NW, where she’s working with and supporting community researchers to uncover and document local migration history. She is particularly interested to maintain the values of global education and thinks the anti-racist values underpinning this project are really important.
